Zoological Survey of India
- The Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) is a premier Indian organisation in zoological research and studies.
- It was established to promote the survey, exploration and research of the fauna.
- The ZSI functions under the MoEFCC, Government of India. Its functions include:
- Exploring, surveying, inventorying and monitoring of faunal diversity in various states, selected ecosystems and protected areas of India.
- Taxonomic studies of the faunal components collected.
- Status survey of threatened and endemic species and preparation of Red Data Book
- Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing studies on recorded animal diversity as well as on threatened species.
- The Red Data Book is the government document established for documenting rare and endangered species of animals, plants and microorganisms.
- It is different from the Red List prepared by the IUCN.
Botanical Survey of India
- The Botanical Survey of India (BSI) is a premier Indian organisation in plant research and studies.
- It was established to promote the survey, exploration and research of the flora.
- The BSI functions under the MoEFCC, Government of India. Its functions include:
- To survey the plant resources of the country.
- To undertake and complete taxonomic studies of all the flora of the country.
- To enlist the endangered species, to undertake measures for effective conservation.
- To collect and maintain germplasm and gene bank of endangered, patent and vulnerable species.
- To act as the custodian of authentic collections in well planned herbaria and documenting plant resources in the form of local, district, state and national flora.
Taxonomy
- Taxonomy is the science of naming, describing and classifying organisms. The organisms include all plants, animals and microorganisms of the world.
