WHAT WAS SWADESHI MOVEMENT?

  • During 1900s, there was ongoing awakening in society and rise of nationalism which was centred in Bengal. To weaken the nerve centre, Bengal, the government decided to partition Bengal in 1903.
  • However, the official reason for partition of Bengal was that with 78 million people, Bengal was too big to administer. The partition of Bengal took place in 1905.
  • The decision escalated the protest meetings and anti partition canpaigns under moderates, leading to passage of boycott resolution in a massive meeting which held in Calcutta town hall.
  • The meeting concluded with a formal proclaimation of swadeshi movement. Swadeshi movement was the most successful pre gandhian movement.
  • In Bengal, this movement was dominated by the Extremists. They put forward new forms of struggle.
  • The movement mainly introduced the boycott of foreign goods and use of public meeting and procession for mass mobilization, Self reliance Or ‘Atma Shakti’, swadeshiu education and enterprised were emphasized.

Difference between stands of Moderates and Extremists over swadeshi and boycott movement:

  • The Extremists wanted to extend swadeshi and boycott from Bengal to rest of the country. They also wanted to extend boycott in every form of association with government.
  • Moderates on the other hand, wanted to confine the boycott movement to Bengal and limit to boycott of only foreign goods.
