Why in news?

  • Recently, Special Forces of India and the USA conducted the joint military exercise ‘VAJRA PRAHAR 2021’ in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Earlier, India and the USA navy had carried out a two-day Passage Exercise (PASSEX) in the eastern Indian Ocean Region.  Vajra Prahar 2021

About Vajra Prahar 

  • Vajra Prahar is the joint military exercise between the special forces of India and the United States (US). The latest edition of this exercise is Vajra Prahar XI that took place in March 2021 at Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh.
  • Vajra Prahar X took place from 13th October 2019 to 28th October 2019 in Seattle (US).
  • The military forces that participate in Vajra Prahar are:
    • The US – The Special Forces and
    • India – The Southern Command of Indian Armed Forces

Aims of the exercise [Vajra Prahar 2021]

The aim of Vajra Prahar is to enhance military cooperation between the two countries and also to capitalise on the rich repository of experiences of each other armies

  • By enhancing interoperability between the two forces
  • By mutually exchanging tactics between the two forces
  • By sharing the best military practices between the two forces
  • By developing joint strategies
  • By conducting operations in a counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism environment

What Are Special Forces?  [Vajra Prahar 2021]

  • Special Forces of India refer to those Special forces units that are specifically organised, trained, and equipped to conduct and support special operations.    Vajra Prahar 2021
  • The three branches of the Indian Armed Forces have separate special forces units namely:
  • Firstly, Para SF: Parachute Regiment (Special Forces) is the special force of the Indian Army. This unit formed in 1966 in the aftermath of the 1965 Indo-Pakistan war.
  • Secondly, MARCOS: Marine Commando Force also called MARCOS established in 1987. It is the special forces unit of the Indian Navy.
  • Thirdly, Garud Commando Force: It was established in 2004. They are the special forces of the Indian AirForce(IAF). (IAF).    Vajra Prahar 2021
