Introduction

  • Robotics is the field of Science and Technology that deals with the design, manufacture, and applications of robots and using computers for their manipulation and processing.Robotics is based on the word ‘Robot’ coined by Karel (Joseph) Capek.
  • The word Robot means self – labour. A Robot is a machine capable of carrying out complex series of actions automatically and replaces human effort, though it may or may not resemble human being in appearance or exhibit human like behaviour.

Background

  • 1928 – 1stJapanese Robot GakuTensoku
  • 1954 – 1st truly modern robot,highly operated programmable and teachable was invented by George Devole named “UNIMATE” 1956- The phrase “Artificial Intelligence” was coined by John McCarty and Marvin
  • 1973- KUKA,            Germany manufactured 1st robot with 6 degrees of freedom named ‘Famulus’ with electronically driven axes
  • 2000- 1st humanoid robot ASIMO (Advanced step in Innovative Mobility) manufactured by Honda can walkat a speed of 6km/hr.

Attributes Of Robotic Technology

  • It is a specialized machine tools with flexibility that distinguishes them from fixed-purpose automation.
  • Robot technology is basically a mechanical arm that is bolted to the Floor, a machine, the ceiling, or, in some cases the wall Fitted with its mechanical hand, and taught to do Repetitive task in a controlled, ordered environment.
  • It has ability to move mechanical arm to perform work.
  • Robot interface with their work environment once a Mechanical hand has been attached to the robot’s tool mounting Plate.

Classification of Robots

  • Robots are categorized depending upon the circuits of the Robots and the variety of application it can perform. The robots are classified into 3 types:
    • Simple level Robots
    • Middle level Robots
    • Complex level Robots

Types of Robots | Robotics In India

  • A robot needs to be above all functional and designed with qualities that suit its primary tasks. It depends on the task at hand whether the robot is big, small, and able to move or nailed to the ground. Generally robots can be divided into following categories-
  • Mobile Robots – Mobile robots are able to move, usually they perform task such as search areas. A prime example is the Mars Explorer, specifically designed to roam the mars surface. Further mobile robots can be divided in two categories:
    • Rolling Robots: Rolling robots have wheels to move around.
      – Walking Robots: Robots on legs are usually brought in when the terrain is rocky and difficult to enter with wheels.
  • Stationary Robots – Robots are not only used to explore areas or imitate a human being. Most robots perform repeating tasks without ever moving an inch. Most robots are ‘working’ in industry settings.
  • Autonomous Robots – Autonomous robots are self supporting or in other words self contained. In a way they rely on their own ‘brains’. Autonomous robots run a program that give them the opportunity to decide on the action to perform depending on their surroundings. At times these robots even learn new behavior.

Applications to Robotics

  • Aerospace: Another application of robots is in aerospace for outer space exploration. Aerospace robots or unmanned robotic spacecraft play a key role in outer space probe.
  • Industrial Sector: Industrial robots are electronically controlled, both programmable and reprogrammable to carry out certain tasks with high precision and accuracy.
  • Outer Space: Robotic arms that are under the control of a human being are employed to unload the docking cove of outer-space shuttles to launch satellites or to build a space station.
  • Healthcare Delivery: A highly possible advancement in healthcare is using robots in robotic surgery. Due to technological advancement, this is possible even if the patient is located in remote areas. This possibility defies distance.
  • Exploration: Robots can enter the environments that are injurious to human beings. An illustration is observing the atmosphere within a volcano or investigating our deep marine life.
  • The Intelligent Home: Robotic systems can nowadays scrutinize home safety, ecological circumstances and energy consumption.
  • Disaster Areas: Observation robots built-in with superior sensing and imaging gears. This robot can work in dangerous environments like urban site spoiled by earthquakes by inspecting floors, walls and roofs for structural reality.
  • Military Robots: Flying robot drones are brought into play for close watch in present time’s modern armed force.
  • Agriculture: Programmed robots are used by harvesters to cut and collect crops. Robotic milk farms are existing permitting workers to nourish and milk their cattle distantly.
  • Entertainment: Interactive robots that shows behaviors and education capability. One such robot is owned by SONY which moves around freely, responds to all your commands, carries your luggage and even responds to your oral instructions.
  • Education: Robots are used as educational assistants to teachers. There are robot kits like Lego Mindstorms, BIOLOID, OLLO from ROBOTIS, or BotBrain Educational Robots can help children to learn about mathematics, physics, programming and electronics.
  • Service robot: “A service robot is a robot which operates semi or fully Autonomously to perform services useful to the well-being of humans and equipment, excluding manufacturing operations.”

Robotics in India

  • India understands the importance of robotics in numerous fields. This will also open up the possibilities in the field of Research activities, Manufacturing, Academia, Space technology, Defence industries, Medical, and Agriculture industry.
  • Following is the timeline vision of robotics in India (Report of National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP), 2030).
    • By 2013-2014 – Agricultural robots
    • By 2013 – 2017 – Robots that care for Elderly
    • By 2013-2020 – Nano Robots
    • By 2015 – To have one third of its fighting capacity provided by Robots
    • By 2017 – Medical Robots performing low invasive surgery
    • By 2017-2019 – Household Robots
    • By 2035 – To have first completely autonomous Robot soldiers on the battlefield

Advancements In India Premier Institutes Of Robotics In India Include

  • Thiruvananthapuram-based startup Gen robotics joined hands with the Kerala government to deploy a spider-shaped robot named “Bandicoot” to clean sewers and manholes in the city.
  • Samsung is using around 80 Epson robots in its new manufacturing plant in Noida.
  • ICICI Bank has deployed their robots in 14-15 locations across India where currency notes are sorted.
  • Bangalore-based SME Suparna Plastics Ltd. which makes plastic ball valves is using SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm) robots in its assembly operations for the high speed and accuracy it brings to the table.
  • Robots are also being introduced in healthcare for operations that require greater precision. E.g. Ahmedabad-based Apex hospital used Corpath technology of US-based Corindus Vascular Robotics to remotely control a robot to perform a telerobotic heart surgery on a patient who was located 32km away in Gandhinagar in December 2018.
  • Manav, India’s first 3D-printed humanoid robot, has an inbuilt vision and sound processing capability and is primarily meant for research purposes and is made available to research institutes which offer robotics as a subject of study.
  • Mitra, the first indigenously built humanoid robot is capable of interacting with humans smartly. It was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ivanka Trump, First Daughter and advisor to the President of the United States Donald Trump, at the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) conference in 2018. It can be found floating in the corridors of the Canara Bank and PVR Cinemas in Bengaluru, chatting with the customers.
  • Robocop – It is a police robot to assist in handling the law, order, and traffic management deployed in Hyderabad. It is designed to protect and secure places like offices, malls, airports, signal posts and other public spaces and can take care of security if deployed autonomously. It can diffuse bombs too.
  • KEMPA- It is a special robot assistant built to suit the needs of the Kempegowda International Airport, which will answer queries of confused passengers in English as well as Kannada.
  • RADA – It is a unique artificial intelligence-based robot developed by Vistara, a joint venture between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines, to automate simple tasks and improve customer experience.
  • IRA (Intelligent Robotic Assistant) is a shiny white interactive humanoid which would essentially help bank branch staff in servicing customers and was launched in Mumbai 2018.
  • INDRO- This is reportedly the tallest humanoid robot built in India. It is an autonomous robot that was made inside a house with easily available low-cost material like aluminium, wood, cardboard, plastic etc. It can be used for lightweight tasks like entertainment, education and a few household works.
  • DRDO’s Daksh- This made-in-India robot is primarily designed to detect and recover Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). It was inducted by Indian Army around 2011. Reportedly, 20 Daksh robots are already being used by the Indian Army. Using its X-ray vision, Daksh can identify a hazardous object and can diffuse it with a jet of water. It got an upgrade in 2015 and has been equipped with chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear hazard detection mechanisms.
  • AGRIBOT – Agriculture Robot: The advantages of Agri-robot which is developed in India is that it can become an admirable agriculture aid for the farmer. The high cost of labor and the increasing need for assisted living has led to the development of the service robotics market. This automated system will be most essential appliance for our society as India is the 2nd largest producer of vegetable crops in the world.

Future of Robotics in India

  • Due to Globalization and High Industrialization, Robotics in India has a bright future mainly in manufacturing, pharmaceutical, FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods), packaging and inspection. Skill development technologies, Defense and Healthcare system are also promising sectors in future.
  • Robotic solutions that can solve the problems of the acute shortage of the Blue Collar talent in India and that will develop separate robotics industry in India.

All India Council for Robotics and Automation

  • It is a not-for-profit organization established in 2014.
  • It sets up standards in robotics & automation and education industry, helping organizations and professionals to solve difficult technical problems, while enhancing their leadership and personal career capabilities.
  • It is engaged in various activities and has launched several programs to promote and build an ecosystem for robotics and automation in India.

Global Innovation Centre

  • DTF Ventures, the Indian Venture Developer and Aggregator has collaborated with AICRA to create, promote and sustain Technology Based Innovation Center in India.
  • This Innovation Center will comprise of Innovation Lab, Incubation Center and Accelerator and lay down innovation as an enabler for inclusive growth and entrepreneurial excellence with special emphasis on ethical business management practices for the students and entrepreneurs of the country.
