RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT

The RTI Act empowers the Indian citizens to seek information from a public authority, thus making the government and its functionaries more accountable and responsible.

RTI is an act that sets out the practical regime of RTI for citizens to ensure access to information under the control of public authorities in order to ensure transparency and accountability in the working of every public authority, the constitution of a Central Information Commission and State Information Commissions and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.                        RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT

  • Every public authority will maintain all its records in a manner that facilitates RTI under the Act and ensures that all records that are appropriate are computerised.
  • Constant endeavour to provide as much information Suo Moto to the public at regular intervals through various means of communication, including Internet to ensure that the public resorts to this Act minimally.
  • Information will be disseminated widely and in such form or manner which is easily accessible to the public.
  • All materials will be disseminated taking into consideration the cost effectiveness, local language and the most effective method of communication in that local area, sand the information will be easily accessible to the extent possible in electronic format, available free or at such cost of the medium or the print cost as may be prescribed.                            RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT
  • Information that cannot be shared is also listed in the RTI Act.
  • For example, there is no obligation to give any citizen:
  • Information, disclosure which may prejudicially affect the sovereignty and integrity of India; strategic, scientific or economic interests of the states; India’s relation with foreign countries or lead to incitement of an offence.
  • Information which has been expressly forbidden to be published by any court of law or the disclosure of which may constitute contempt of court.                  RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT
