FACT # 1

State Symbols: Andhra Pradesh

Why in news? The state of Andhra Pradesh has recently declared its new state symbols.

State symbols: Andhra Pradesh:

  • Andhra Pradesh government has declared new state symbols to replace the ones held by Telangana after it was created.
  • The new state of Telangana was created from Andhra Pradesh in June 2014.
  • The government has envisioned AP as a State which is green and eco-friendly with beautiful landscaping, to make people happy and cheerful.
  • While Hyderabad is the shared state capital for both states presently, Andhra Pradesh plans to make Amravati its future capital.
  • Andhra has chosen its new state bird and flower but it has retained black buck as its state animal and the neem tree as the state tree.
  • The Indian roller and blue water-lilly were state bird and flower of Andhra Pradesh earlier.
  • State Bird:
    • The rose-ringed parrot has been chosen as the new state bird.
    • Rose-ringed parrot is declared as the State bird for its beauty and cheerfulness.
  • State Flower:
    • Jasmine is declared as the State flower of Andhra Pradesh.
    • It has been done as the purity of its fragrance symbolises the State’s vision to spread positivity and knowledge among its people and in the nation.
  • State Animal:
    • Black buck has been retained as the state animal of Andhra Pradesh.
    • It is known for its quickness and ability to take charge in uncertain situations and rise victorious which is symbolic of AP and its people.
  • State Tree:
    • Neem is declared as the State tree.
    • Known for nourishing those around it with clean air, Neem tree symbolises the State’s genuine & transparent relations with its people.

 

  • State symbols of Telangana:
    • State bird: Indian Roller
    • State flower: Tangedu
    • State animal: Jinka or spotted deer
    • State tree: Jammi Chettu

FACT # 2

Indo-Pacific Command

Why in news? United States has renamed its oldest and largest stragically important military command US Pacific Command (PACOM) to Indo-Pacific Command.

Indo-Pacific Command:

  • The U.S. has renamed its strategically important Pacific Command (PACOM) as the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command.
  • It has been done as a public expression of America’s keenness to count India as key partner in its strategic planning.
  • The Trump administration has already been using the term Indo-Pacific instead of Asia-Pacific in official documents.
  • As per US, the Indo-Pacific Command is critical for a region open to investment and free, fair and reciprocal trade.
  • It is not bound by any nation’s predatory economics or threat of coercion, for the Indo-Pacific has many belts and many roads.
  • America continues to invest vigorously in Indo-Pacific stability.

FACT # 3

Mission Raftaar

Why in news? There has been huge progress in the ‘Mission Raftaar’ which aims to increasing speed of trains in Indian Railways.

Mission raftaar:

  • The mission envisages a target of doubling of average speed of freight trains and increasing the average speed of all non-suburban passenger trains by 25 kmph in the next 5 years.
  • Recently, Principal routes have been identified by the government for raising of speed under Mission Raftaar.
  • These are six routes on Golden Quadrilateral and diagonals namely:
    • Delhi – Mumbai
    • Delhi – Howrah
    • Howrah- Chennai
    • Chennai – Mumbai
    • Delhi – Chennai
    • Howrah – Mumbai
  • These six routes carry 58% of freight traffic and 52% of coaching traffic with a share of only 16% of the network.
  • Golden Quadrilaterals and its Diagonal routes have been prioritized for replacement of loco hauled short distance passenger trains by MEMUs/DEMUs having better acceleration and deceleration characteristics for fast pickup and braking.
