PLANT REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

PLANT REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

  • Inside the flowering plant, both male and female reproductive organs are present. The male reproductive organ is called stamen and the female reproductive organ is called the pistil (or carpel).
  • The stamen consists of anther which releases pollen. This pollen gets transferred to pistil either by the action of winds or by an insect or animal. This transfer of pollen from anther to pistil is known as pollination.
  • Ovary is located at the bottom of the pistil. Apart from ovary, the carpel also consists of stigma and style. Pollen from anther gets attached to stigma.
  • Thereafter, it ruptures, releasing the male sperm. This male sperm is transferred to ovary through style. Fertilizations takes place at the ovary.            PLANT REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
  • Ovules are located inside the ovary. There may be one or more ovules which remain attached to the wall of the ovary.
  • Ovules mature at the same time the ovary is matured and turn into seeds, while the ovary turns into a mature fruit.                    PLANT REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
  • For instance, there are many seeds inside a watermelon, while there is only one seed inside the fruit of peach.
  • It means that there are many ovules inside the ovary of a watermelon, while there is only a single ovule inside the ovary of a peach plant.

WHAT ARE HERBS AND SHRUBS?

  • Herbs are plants with little or no wood tissue. They are often aromatic and the leaves can be used to flavour the food.                    PLANT REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM
  • Shrubs are plants with multiple wo od stems growing from a common centre, while trees usually have a single woody stem. Herbs and shrubs are small plants, while trees are taller.
  • Herbs do not grow more than one metre tall. On the other hand, shrubs can grow up to six metres tall.
