How to Crack IAS in First Attempt

Crack IAS in First Attempt

Let me start by saying – One’s 1st attempt should be one’s BEST attempt.

To crack one of the most challenging exams of the country , you need to strategize your preparation right from the beginning. Being in 2nd year of college, you can religiously study and marvel each and every topic. But remember, the time that you have for your exam should be an advantage to you not a disadvantage. Let the , ‘I still have a lot of time left’ kind of approach never affect your level of focus.

Now let’s talk about preparation. Here is a step by step road map for Civil Services Preparation –

STEP 1 : KNOW THE EXAM STRUCTURE

UPSC Civil Services Exam is conducted in three phases –

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Objective)
Stage 2: Main Examination (Subjective)
Stage 3: Interview (Vocal)

There are 2 papers in Prelims –

Paper I

Paper II

Paper I tests you on General Studies and Paper II tests you on Aptitude.

There are 9 papers in Mains –

Indian Language (Qualifying)

English (Qualifying)

Essay

General Studies – I

General Studies – II

General Studies – III

General Studies – IV

Optional Subject Paper 1

Optional Subject Paper 2

STEP 2: UNDERSTAND THE COMPLETE SYLLABUS

Once you’re done with going through the syllabus and having a clear idea about it, start with basics. NCERTs and ICSE books make for an excellent start. Understand concepts and then move on to the more popular and prescribed books subjects wise.

STEP 3: PREPARATION FOR GENERAL STUDIES

Since the official syllabus does not give much detail of the topics to be studied under each subject it is expected to gain knowledge of them that should be slightly below the graduation level but definitely above the high school level. Any aspirant who has a grip over General Studies can be sure of good spot in his/her exam.

Prepare for Prelims and Mains simultaneously. Do not commit the blunder of leaving preparation for Mains till the end. The time after prelims should be spent in exclusive revision of the Mains exam as well as in covering left out topics.

STEP4: READ THE HINDU (ALONG WITH OTHER NEWSPAPERS) RELIGIOUSLY

You have got to invest time daily in for reading the Hindu. Read, focus, amalgamate and note down the relevant information. Keep a separate notebook or sheets for content taken from the Hindu. You must Watch my classes on Youtube  It will come handy when the exam draws close. In addition to the Hindu, the following magazines should also be referred –

Yojana

Kurukshetra

Civil Services Times

Down to Earth

Science Reporter

Frontline

STEP 5: SELECTION AND PREPARATION OF THE OPTIONAL IN ORDER TO CRACK IAS in first Attempt

Selecting the most relevant IAS Mains Optional goes a long way in helping a student score well in Civil Services Mains Exam.

Choose an optional because you feel it’ll suit you best and not because it is ‘popular’ or chosen by previous years’ ‘toppers.’

4 Things to Avoid While Choosing an Optional

  • Blindly following successful aspirants of previous years
  • Following popular opinion about optional subjects
  • Listening to advice by friends and family on what they think is best for you
  • Not doing a proper research and analysis of the different optionals offered by UPSC

STEP 6: GO THROUGH PREVIOUS YEAR QUESTION PAPERS

Going through the last five year papers (at least 5 years) will familiarize you with the kind of questions asked in the examination and this give give a push to your strategy of cracking IAS in first Attempt.

One thing you have to understand here is that UPSC will NEVER repeat a question.

So don’t mug up questions. It’ll be of no use. What will be of use is the fact that the ‘type’ of question might get repeated. Going through past year’s papers will will make you understand the scope of the questions being asked. So when you study different subjects, you will keep that in mind. Civil Service Exam is not just about hard work. It’s a combination of both hard work and smart work.

STEP 7 – ENROLL YOURSELF IN A TEST SERIES

Once you have got a good grip over a large part of the syllabus, get enrolled in a test series (preferably Brainy IAS ).

Once you have got a good grip over a large part of the syllabus, get enrolled in a good test series. Attempt regular mock tests. Also, it is expected of you to go through at least five year previous question papers in detail.

Remember that you don’t have to go to Delhi (as many perceive) to crack Civil Services.

There are numerous online test series available. If you have access to mock tests in your city, good. If not, get yourself enrolled online. The key here is to practice as much as you can. Brainy IAS Test series is Best in India.

STEP 8: PRACTICE ANSWER WRITING-Enhance your chances to Crack IAS in first attempt.

One of the most effective hacks of cracking the Mains Exam is to practice writing answers. I say this with my own experience and insist on you trying out the same.

Practicing answer writing has 2 benefits –

  • Helps you with remembering concepts in the exam.
  • Helps you with Time management

An aspirant should develop the craft of writing good and concise answers so that the examiner understands them clearly. Crisp and ‘to the point’ answers will make sure that you get awarded with the appropriate marks.

For Developing Answer Writing you can Use Magi q/a– The answer writing software developed by me.

The above strategy will go a long way in helping you to crack IAS in very first attempt.

All the best 🙂
