  • The Nobel Prizes regarded as the most prestigious awards given for intellectual achievement in the world are awarded annually from a fund bequeathed for that purpose by the Swedish inventor and industrialist Alfred Nobel.
  • It is announced every year for excellence in Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Economics, and a distinguished achievement towards humanity – commonly known as the Nobel Peace Prize.

The Institutions That Choose Winners

The Nobel Committees of the prize-awarding institutions are responsible for the selection of the candidates, the institutions being:

  • Nobel Prize in Physics, Nobel Prize in Chemistry: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences
  • Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: The Karolinska Institutet
  • Nobel Prize in Literature: The Swedish Academy
  • Nobel Peace Prize: A five-member Committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament (Storting)
  • Prize in Economic Sciences: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

  • The Nobel Peace Prize 2020 was awarded to World Food Programme (WFP) “for its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict.”

About WFP

  • The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organisation addressing hunger and promoting food security. In 2019, the WFP provided assistance to close to 100 million people in 88 countries who are victims of acute food insecurity and hunger.
  • In 2015, eradicating hunger was adopted as one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
  • The WFP is the UN’s primary instrument for realising this goal.
  • In recent years, the situation has taken a negative turn. In 2019, 135 million people suffered from acute hunger, the highest number in many years.
  • Most of the increase was caused by war and armed conflict.

WFP in India | Nobel Prize For Peace 2020

  • It has been working in India since 1963 where it has focused upon reforms in the Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS) and provided policy inputs, advocacy and technical assistance for improving access to food.
  • The WFP has proposed unique initiatives like Automatic Grain Dispensing Machine (Annapurti) and Mobile Storage Units for the effective implementation of TPDS.

Developmental Projects

  • WFP development projects are focused on nutrition, especially for mothers and children, addressing malnutrition.
  • Through programmes WFP targets the first 1,000 days from conception to a child’s second birthday, and later through school meals.
  • WFP is the largest humanitarian organisation implementing school feeding programmes worldwide and has been doing so for over 50 years.
  • In 2019, WFP provided school meals to more than 17.3 million children in 50 countries.
  • In 2019, WFP provided 4,2 million metric tons of food and US$2.1 billion of cash and vouchers.
  • By buying food as close as possible to where it is needed, WFP saves time and money on transport costs.
  • WFP meets people’s food needs through cash-based transfers that allow the people we serve to choose and shop for their own food locally.
  • WFP also provides services including passenger air transportation through the UN Humanitarian Air Service.

Funding | Nobel Prize For Peace 2020

  • Funded entirely by voluntary donations, WFP raised a record-breaking US$8 billion in 2019.
  • Since WFP has no independent source of funds, all donations either in cash or in-kind .
  • Governments , Corporates and Individuals support on an entirely voluntary basis.
  • WFP has more than 17,000 staff worldwide of whom over 90 percent are based in the countries where the agency provides assistance.
