Nanda Devi Glacier Burst

Nanda Devi Glacier Burst

  • In Feb 07, 2021, Nanda Devi glacier burst in the form of an avalanche and deluge near Uttarakhand’s  Joshimath.
  • It led arrival of natural calamities like massive flash floods in the Dhauliganga and Alaknanda rivers, washing away some people alive, trapping many under landslide debris and destroying several houses.
  • Two power projects — NTPC’s Tapovan-Vishnugad hydel project and the Rishi Ganga Hydel Project — were extensively damaged with scores of labourers trapped in tunnels as the waters came rushing in.

About Nanda Devi Glacier

  • Nanda Devi is the second highest mountain in India after Kangchenjunga, the highest located entirely within the country. It is the 23rd-highest peak in the world.
  • Nanda Devi group of glaciers fall within the upper Rishi Ganga catchment, central Himalaya, covering 690 sq km.
  •  The glacier is located within the Nanda Devi Sanctuary and drains west into the Rishiganga.

What is Glacier Lake Burst Flood (GLOF)

  • A glacial lake outburst is a type of outburst flood that occurs when water dammed by a glacier is released. In other words, it’s an outburst that happens when a dam containing a glacial lake fails.
  • These rare instances occur when water dammed by a glacier or moraine is released. The glacier containing the body of water melts and overflows the glacier.      Nanda Devi Glacier Burst
  • A glacial outburst may occur due to several factors. According to experts, the direct causes of glacial lake outbursts resulting in floods are heavy rainfall/snowmelt, earthquake, cascading process, long term dam degradation, and rapid slope movement into the lake.
  • GLOF events are not unusual, but their impact depends on the size of the proglacial lake that burst, and location.
  • Glacier outburst because of many reasons like erosion, the build-up of water pressure, an avalanche of snow or rocks, and also an earthquake under the ice. It  happen when there is a massive displacement of water in the glacial area when a large portion of an adjacent glacier collapses.
