Green Revolution

  • Green Revolution, a term coined by William Gaud, is a process that leads to improved agricultural productivity.
  • In Indian context, it was formally announced by Mrs. Indira Gandhi in 1968 during one of the three Annual Plans after the Third Five Year Plan.
  • It took place with the implementation of New Agricultural Strategy (NAS) consisting of six components:
  • Introduction of High Yielding Varieties (HYV) of seeds
  • Use of more water and fertilizers
  • Farm mechanism
  • Intensive and Multiple cropping
  • Increasing use of insecticides and pesticides

Technology Mission Approach

  • This approach was adopted by Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, after completion of first —phase of Green Revolution in 1984.
  • It was concerned with improving the production and productivity of crops like pulses and oil seeds which were neglected in the first phase.
  • Although, the performance of oilseeds was satisfactory, due to a number of ecological and economic reasons, the approach was not successful.

Ever — Green Revolution

  • In the light of above fact Dr. M.S. Swaminathan called for an ever green revolution.
  • Ever — green revolution implies increasing productivity in perpetuity without associated ecological harm. This will all for mainstreaming ecological principals in technology development and dissemination.

Rainbow Revolution

  • It was proposed by the Central Government during Tenth Five Year Plan.
  • It was proposed to encompass an all-round growth in the production, of food grains (green revolution), edible oils (yellow revolution), fruits (golden revolution) milk (white revolution), fisheries (blue revolution), eggs (silver revolution) etc.  Major Reforms of Indian Agricultural Sector and their Future Ahead
