LAHORE SESSION OF CONGRESS AND PURNA SWARAJ

  • Even with 15 out of 18 Provincial Congress Committees voting against Nehru being the President of the session, Gandhi backed him and he was made the President of the session.
  • Gandhi’s decision was reflected from the efforts that Nehru had put in to popularize the concept of Puma swaraj and because of the aim of the session being the acceptance of Puma Swaraj as the Goal.
  • The role of young was appreciated which made the anti-Simon campaign a huge success.

NEHRU IN HIS SPEECH PROVIDED FOR THE FOLLOWING

  1. Complete independence as the goal of congress
  2. The road to independence has to be through peaceful means
  3. Not only oust of foreign rule was desired but also socialist system to be adopted post independence was proposed.

FOLLOWING MAJOR DECISIONS WERE TAKEN AT THE LAHORE SESSION

  1. RTC to be boycotted
  2. Complete independence declared as the aim of Congress
  3. CWC authorized to launch a programme of Civil Disobedience including non­payment of taxes and all members of legislature were asked to resign their seats

Dec 31, 1929

  • At midnight on the banks of river Ravi, the newly adopted tricolor flag of freedom was hoisted amidst the slogans of lnquilab Zindabad

Jan 26, 1930

  • Public meetings were organized across the nation with the read out of the pledge and flag hoisting.
  • Pledge included following:
  1. It is our inalienable right to have freedom
  2. British have not only deprived us from our freedom but have exploited us economically, culturally, socially, politically and spiritually.
  3. We are economically ruined by high revenue, destruction of our village industries with no substitutions made, while customs, currency and exchange rate are manipulated to our disadvantage
  4. No real political powers are given- right to free association is denied to us and all administrative talent in us is killed.
  5. Culturally, the system of education has torn us from our moorings
  6. Spiritually, compulsory disarmament has made us unmanly
  7. We hold it a crime against man and God to submit any longer to British rule
  8. We will prepare for complete independence by withdrawing, as much as possible, all voluntary association from the Government and will prepare for Civil Disobedience through non-payment of taxes.   9. We will carry out the congress instructions for the purpose of establishing Puma Swaraj.
