ENDANGERED SPECIES

  • The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is an NGO based in Switzerland which is engaged in the conservation of both flora and fauna.
  • It annually publishes the ‘Red Data Book. The ‘Red Data Book’ consists of species of both plants and animals which are endangered.
  • It also consists of pink-coloured pages pertaining to critically endangered species and green-coloured pages pertaining to species which were critically endangeread earlier, but have been recovered now.

Classification of Species by IUCN 

The IUCN classifies flora and fauna in the following categories:

  1. Extinct: Those species of which even the last individual has died.
  2. Extinct in the world: Those species whose individuals survive within captivity only.
  3. Critically Endangered: Those species which meet any of the following criteria:
  4. Reduction in population by more than 90% over the last 10 years.
  5. Population size is less than 50 mature individuals.
  6. Probability of extinction in the wild habitat is at least 50% in the next 10 years.
  7. Endangered: Those species which meet any of the following criteria:
    a. Reduction in population by more than 70% over the last 10 years.
  8. Population size is less than 250 mature individuals.
  9. Probability of extinction in the wild habitat is at least 20% in the next 20 years.
  10. Vulnerable: Those species which meet any of the following criteria:
  11. Reduction in population by more than 50% over the last 10 years.
  12. Population size is less than 10,000 mature individuals.
  13. Probability of extinction in the wild habitat is at least 10% in the next 100 years.
  14. Near threatened: Species which do not qualify for vulnerable category, but are close to it or are likely to be threatened in future.
  15. Least concerned: Species which are widespread.
  16. Data deficient: Data is insufficient to make assessment about these species.
  17. Not evaluated: When species have not been evaluated against any criteria.

Threatened species refer to the species which are critically endangaered, endangered or vulnerable.
