DRDO’s Advanced Chaff Technology

DRDO’s Advanced Chaff Technology

Why in news?

  • Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed an Advanced Chaff Technology to safeguard the naval ships against enemy missile attack.
  • Defence Laboratory Jodhpur (DLJ), a DRDO laboratory, has indigenously developed three variants of this critical technology namely Short Range Chaff Rocket (SRCR), Medium Range Chaff Rocket (MRCR) and Long Range Chaff Rocket (LRCR) meeting Indian Navy’s qualitative requirements.
  • Indian Navy conducted trials of all three variants in the Arabian Sea on Indian Naval Ship and found the performance satisfactory.

What Is Chaff?

  • Chaff is originally called Window. The idea of using Chaff developed in the era of second world war.
  • It is basically a radio frequency counter measure.
  • It consists of aluminium coated glass fibres ranging in lengths of 0.75 centimetres to 0.8 centimetres. They are released in packets of 100 million such fibres.
  • Most of the modern armed forces use chaff to distract the missiles from their targets.
  • The warships use chaff for self-defence.
  • An intercontinental ballistic missile releases chaff in its mid-course.What is Advanced Chaff Technology?
    • Chaff is a passive expendable electronic countermeasure technology used worldwide to protect naval ships from enemy’s radar and Radio Frequency (RF) missile seekers.
    • Modern armed forces use chaff (in naval applications, for instance, using short-range SRBOC rockets) to distract radar-guided missiles from their targets.
    • Most military aircraft and warships have chaff dispensing systems for self-defense.

    • According to DRDO, the significance of the latest development lied in the fact that a very less quantity of the Chaff material will be deployed in the air.
    • It will act as a decoy to deflect the attacking missiles for the safety of our ships.
    • DRDO has now gained the expertise that will help it in meeting the futuristic threats from the enemies. A unique technology that is not available from the outside.
    • The development of Advanced Chaff Technology by DRDO lab is another step towards Atmanirbhar Bharat.  DRDO’s Advanced Chaff Technology
    • The main objective of the satellite is to boost the surveillance capability of India and monitor military warships and merchant shipping in the Indian Ocean Region.
