CAUSES OF FAILURE OF SWADESHI MOVEMENT

CAUSES OF FAILURE OF SWADESHI MOVEMENT

The most active phase of Swadeshi movement was over by 1908.

This happened because of many reasons like —

  1. The British government cracked down on the revolutionaries. This severe repression made the movement slow down from public sphere.
  2. There was a lack of formal party structure and an essential part of the movement which could have been led by its office bearers was absent due to it.
  3. The prominent leaders of the movement were arrested which rendered the movement leaderless.
  4. Also some of the towering leaders such as Aurobindo Ghosh and Bipin Chandra Pal were retired.
  5. The unity of the leadership was broken by the Surat split in 1907.
  6. The movement could not maintain the aroused spirit of the masses.
  7. It was only confined to the upper middle class and could not truly enter the masses as peasantry remained unaffected by it.                        CAUSES OF FAILURE OF SWADESHI MOVEMENT
  8. Non cooperation and passive resistance could not find a practical implementation.
  9. The movement could not sustain itelf at the high pitch that it had achieved

EVALUATION OF THE SWADESWHI MOVEMENT

Although it faded into inactivity, the Swadeshi movement was a first in itself in the modern Indian history. Here is an evaluation —

  1. Although it could not involve masses completely, it did an improvement over the previous methods. There was participation of hitherto untouched masses — students, women, sections o’ rural and urban population.
  2. It employed a whole gamut of methods which ranged from peaceful petitions and prayer to incipient socialism to political Extremism and revolutionary terrorism. The movement also witnessed the involvement of arts, literature, science, culture and social reforms.              CAUSES OF FAILURE OF SWADESHI MOVEMENT
  3. This was an important experience for people who got to learn to raise their grievances through political protest, take strong political stands and participate in new political activity.
  4. The Swadeshi campaign undermined the colonial Ideology and its institutions.
